Document 2051 DOCN M94A2051 TI Report of a self-help group based on quality of life for people with HIV/AIDS. DT 9412 AU Mello JH; GIV, Sao Paulo/Brazil. SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):392 (abstract no. PD0177). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370524 AB OBJECTIVE: In response to requests from communities, built strategies for education and prevention, promoted multidisciplinary collaboration, cross-cultural community awareness as well as encouraged constructive methods to cope with HIV/AIDS in Brazil. METHODS: Target group members answered questionnaires in order to evaluate their current knowledge. Educational programs were designed to best suit their needs. Volunteer representatives met with health care professionals, PWA and community groups in a variety of forums for lectures, safe sex workshops, lifestyle management instruction, and distribution of educational materials. RESULTS: Our organization offered educational assistance to 47 communities helping in establishing programs for HIV prevention in their communities as well as encouraged policy development and strategies for solidarity and improved health care for PWA. CONCLUSION: Insufficient funding restricted expansion of our services. We chose to spend limited funds on primary needs rather than outcome evaluation. We strongly believe self-help organizations play an essential role in policy development, education, prevention and quality of life for PWA, specially in third world countries.
